To get this visa, you must have a valid passport from an eligible country. In case you have a dual citizenship, that is you hold more than one passport then you must carry the passport which is linked to your work and holiday visa grant. You will not be able to extend this visa but you can get a visitor visa in order to stay longer in case of exceptional circumstances.

Passport holders India, China and Vietnam will have to participate in a visa pre application process and will be randomly selected in the ballot to apply for a first work and holiday visa Subclass 462. The cost of the visa is AUD 650.

Types of Working Holiday Visas

Working Holiday visa Subclass 417

This visa will allow you to:

  • Do short term work in the country and pay for your holiday for 12 months,
  • Study in Australia for up to 4 months,
  • Travel to and from the country as many times as you want,
  • Do three months of specified work for a second working holiday visa,
  • You can only work for the same employer for 6 months.

The applicant can get a second working holiday visa if:

  • You have completed three months of specified sub class 417 work Or
  • Hold a substantive visa Or
  • Your last substantive visa expired less than 28 days ago.

For a third working holiday visa if you meet certain eligibility criteria:

  • You should have worked for 6 months of specified visa Subclass 417 work Or
  • You must hold a substantive visa Or
  • The last substantive visa expired less than 28 days ago.

Work and Holiday visa Subclass 462

  • This visa will allow you to:

  • Do short term work in Australia and pay for your holiday for 12 months,
  • Study for up to 4 months,
  • Unrestricted travel from Australia as many times as you want,
  • Three months of specified sub class 4 6 2 work to become eligible for a second work and holiday visa,
  • You can work for the same employer only for 6 months.

You can apply for a second work and holiday visa if:

  • you have completed three months of specified subclass 462 work,
  • Hold a substances visa in Australia Or
  • Your last substances visa expired less than 28 days ago.

You will also be able to apply for a third work and holiday visa if you meet certain eligibility criteria:

  • You have completed 6 months of specified visa Subclass 462 work,
  • Hold a substantive visa in Australia Or
  • Your last substantive visa expired less than 28 days ago.

Work and Holiday Visa Requirements

Subclass 462 Requirements

The following criteria need to be fulfilled for your first Work and Holiday visa:

  • You must be a citizen of and hold a passport from certain specific countries to be able to apply for this visa.
  • Applicant must be aged 18 to 30 years, both years inclusive, at the time of your application.
  • You must not have entered Australia previously on a work and holiday visa subclass 462 or a working holiday visa subclass 417.
  • You should meet the education requirements as per the country passport that you hold. These are usually a tertiary qualification from a University, college or a training centre. These could be degrees, graduate certificates or diplomas.
  • Applicant must have a sound knowledge of functional English.
  • You have to provide a letter of support from your government in case you belong to a specific list of countries.
  • You should have enough money to support yourself while you are in the country and leave the country at the end of your stay. This is usually about AUD 5,000.
  • Applicant has to meet the health and character requirements as required by the department.
  • If you have any debts towards the Australian government then you should have paid it back before applying for this visa.
  • There should be no previous visa cancellations or application refusals for you to get this visa. The department will consider your immigration history while making a decision on your application.

Step by step application process is as follows:

Step 1 before application

  • You are a citizen and hold a valid passport that has been issued by the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, New Zealand or Republic of Ireland.
  • Applicant’s English level has been assessed as functional by the Australian adult migrant English program service provider.

Step 3. Applying for the visa

Applicants will have to apply online for this visa. Log in to create an ImmiAccount first. Then attach the required documents and evidence. You will then pay the application fee as the application will not be processed until you pay the fee. It is important to note the transaction reference number.

If you are a parent of a child under the age of 18 then you cannot apply online. The visa holders cannot be accompanied by dependent children at any time during their stay in the country.

Step 4. Visa outcome

The department will give you a decision on your application in writing. Once the apartment grants you the visa you will get a visa grant number along with the visa conditions.

The processing of your visa application can take up to 3 weeks.

Your application will take longer to process in case of the following:

  • Filling of incorrect details,
  • Missing documentation,
  • More information is required from you,
  • Verification of your information takes time.
